Teaching Opportunities for 2008-09
- Lit Media/Tech Support teacher
To teach at a KIPP school, educators must be driven by a commitment to the idea that all students will learn. Much is expected of the students, and even more is expected of the teachers. The school model is based on the need to have teachers who will do whatever it takes to have each student reach his or her potential.
Successful candidates should:
- Be Mission Driven: Candidates must believe that all students, regardless of background, can and will achieve academic excellence and success in college and life through a combination of rigorous curriculum expectations, excellent instruction, supportive relationships with adults, and personal commitment in a well organized school environment.
- Be a Relentless Achiever: Candidates must have high expectations for their own achievement and that of students and teachers. Candidates must have a strong background in and command of his/her content area.
- Demonstrate Instructional Excellence: Candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of success in a full-time teaching position, preferably with underserved urban students. Candidates must have a bold and ambitious vision for developing a rigorous high school department in a chosen field of study. Candidates must be committed to ongoing professional growth and adolescent personal and character growth as well as academic achievement.
- Possess Strong Team and Interpersonal Skills: Candidates must show potential to work effectively with a cohesive and diverse team of teachers, students, and parents. Candidates must be able to listen carefully to and learn from others and have sincere respect for teachers, families and students. Spanish language ability is a plus.
- Exude Enthusiasm and Commitment: Candidates must project a passion for teaching and learning on a daily basis while connecting with students of all background and levels. Candidates must uphold student attainment as a teacher’s highest priority and remain dedicated to the mission for student success in high school, college, and life.

Professional Development
Teachers begin their commitment with 2-3 weeks of training designed specifically for teachers new to our schools. Teachers will be exposed to seminars and workshops on standards, foundations of teaching, and classroom management and culture. During this training, experienced teachers will also receive a critical orientation to the rigor and expectations of being a teacher in a KIPP school. Both new and experienced teachers will participate in discussions and activities focused on the challenges and benefits of teaching in a diverse and rigorous educational setting.
Throughout the school year, participants will also be given access to additional professional development activities that are focused on specific classroom or instructional topics. Further, the KIPP Foundation sponsors a national summit each year to bring together educators from KIPP schools around the nation.
